Collection: Aster Seeds
Asters are a gorgeous staple for cut flower gardens, known for their daisy-like blooms that add color, texture, and charm to late-summer arrangements. These resilient plants thrive in the Canadian climate and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden. Asters are perfect for garden borders, flower beds, and seasonal bouquets.
How do I grow Asters from seed?
In order to grow Asters from seed, you need to start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sow them directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Use well-drained soil in a sunny spot, and lightly cover the seeds with soil, keeping them moist until germination. Thin seedlings to provide airflow and prevent mildew. For continuous blooms, deadhead regularly and water consistently. Asters flourish when given plenty of sun and space to branch out, rewarding you with vibrant, long-lasting flowers through fall.
Aster Seeds vs. Symphyotrichum: What Gardeners Should Know
Many flowers commonly referred to as asters are botanically classified under the genus Symphyotrichum, which includes most North American native varieties. While the scientific name has changed, these plants are still widely known as asters and share the same familiar daisy-like blooms, late-season flowering, and pollinator-friendly benefits gardeners expect. Both traditional asters and Chinese asters (Callistephus chinensis) are valued for their reliability, long bloom time, and suitability for Canadian gardens.
