Achillea ptarmica
Delicate, pearl-like white blooms dot airy green stems, creating a soft, meadow-like charm in the garden. Despite its dainty appearance, Yarrow Sneezeweed is tough, thriving in a range of conditions and attracting butterflies and beneficial insects all season long.
These long-lasting flowers are perfect for fresh or dried arrangements, adding a touch of whimsy to any bouquet. Once established, this perennial is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and tolerant of both drought and damp soils. A beautiful addition to cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and mixed borders.
Growing Instructions:
- Space: 12" to 2 feet
- Sun: Full Sun - Part Shade
- Germination: 14 - 21 days
- Height: 24 - 36"
- Perennial: Zones 3 - 8
- Edible* and medicinal
Sowing: Start indoors (recommended) 6 - 8 weeks before last frost. Lightly press seeds into soil but do not cover, as they require light to germinate. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant outdoors after the last frost. Can be direct sown once the soil has warmed and is workable.
Edible Uses:
- Leaves – The young leaves have a peppery, slightly bitter flavour and have been used sparingly in salads or as a seasoning in soups and stews. Some people compare the taste to a more intense version of regular yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
- Flowers – Occasionally used as an edible garnish, though they have a strong, somewhat pungent taste.
- Herbal Tea – Dried leaves and flowers can be brewed into a tea, traditionally used for digestive or cold remedies.
*Caution:
While sneezewort is technically edible, it should be consumed in moderation, as it contains bitter compounds that may cause stomach discomfort in some people. Additionally, those sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family (like chamomile or daisies) should test for allergies before ingesting.
