Westlandse Winter Organic Kale
Brassica oleracea var. acephala
Tough as a Canadian winter (almost)! Westlandse Winter is a traditional Dutch variety of curly kale, grown for its exceptional cold tolerance and rich, full flavour that actually improves after a frost. Its deep green, frilly leaves are packed with nutrients and hold up beautifully through the fall—and even into early winter in milder regions.
This is a slow and steady grower, producing sturdy plants that reach up to 24" (60 cm) tall. Whether you're harvesting baby leaves or letting it mature for hearty soups and sautés, this kale is a reliable, organic choice for cool-season growing.
- Extremely cold-hardy
- Great for overwintering in coastal or sheltered zones
Growing tip: Sow in late summer for a fall-to-winter harvest, or start indoors in early spring for cool-season greens. Leaves get sweeter after a good frost!
Planting: indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost or direct sow when soil is 10-30C (50-F).
