Brussels Sprouts Long Island Improved Seeds

~25 Seeds

Brussels Sprouts Long Island Improved is a classic heirloom vegetable seed that’s been a backyard favourite since the 1890s, prized for its reliable performance and generous yields. This tried-and-true variety produces uniform, firm green sprouts tightly packed along sturdy, upright stems — often 50 to 100 per plant — making it a standout choice for home gardens and cooler-season growing. The sprouts hold well on the stalk, letting you harvest gradually from the bottom up, and they taste sweeter after a light frost. Perfect for gardeners looking to grow tasty, traditional Brussels sprouts with dependable results in fall and early winter harvests.

  • Nutritious cool-season crop
  • Heavy yielding — 50–100 sprouts per plant
  • Sweet flavour enhanced by frost
  • Heirloom, open-pollinated
  • Sturdy growth habit
  • Excellent for fall harvest

Growing Instructions

Start seeds indoors about 4–5 weeks before your average last frost date in a quality soilless mix. Sow seeds about ¼ inch (6 mm) deep and maintain warm soil around 21 °C (70 °F) for germination, which usually takes about 7–10 days. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, gradually harden off and transplant to a sunny garden site after frost danger has passed, spacing plants about 24 in (60 cm) apart with similar spacing between rows. Brussels sprouts prefer rich, fertile soil and consistent moisture. Harvest sprouts from the bottom moving upward once they’re firm and about 1–1½ in (2.5–3.8 cm) in diameter; a few light frosts before harvest can improve flavour.
