Direct sow as early as soil can be worked in spring. Seed 1 cm (1/2 in) deep, 2 cm (1 in) apart. Space the rows 45 cm (18 in) apart. Plants grow to about 2.5 feet, so plant where they will not shade smaller plants. Once plants reach 5 cm (2 in) thin to 10 cm (4 in) apart. Harvest after they reach at least 3 inches wide, but if you leave until after first heavy frost, it improves the flavour. Fertilize for strong healthy roots. If you plan to harvest smaller turnips early, consider succession planting for a longer harvest window!
