C. pepo – Small Sugar Pumpkin

First grown in 1863, the Small Sugar pumpkin is a beloved heirloom variety and a top choice for baking pies. Over the years, it’s been known by many names, including New England Pie Pumpkin, Northeast Pie, Boston Pie, Sugar Pie, Early Sugar Pie, and Sweet Sugar—testament to its long-standing popularity!

These classic pie pumpkins are small, round, and slightly flattened, with a bright orange rind and faint ribbing. Their fine-grained, stringless flesh is ideal for pies and canning. Each pumpkin typically measures about 20 cm (8") tall and 23 cm (9") wide.

Sowing Instructions

  • Indoors: Plant seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before your last frost date.
  • Outdoors: Wait until 2 weeks after the last frost date, when soil has warmed to at least 70°F (21°C). Pumpkins are frost-sensitive and need warm soil for healthy growth. Sow seeds directly into the ground in mounds (hills) spaced 3–4 feet (90–120 cm) apart. Plant 2–3 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest plant once seedlings appear.
  • Transplant plants at a minimum of 90-120cm (36-48″) apart in rows 120-180cm (48-72″) apart.
  • Seed depth: 1 inch (2.5 cm)
  • Germination: 5–10 days
