Peas – Purple Mist (Organic)

22 Grams (~100 Seeds)

Peas – Purple Mist is a strikingly beautiful Dutch heirloom dual-purpose pea with deep purple pods that shine like jewels on the vine.

This variety is as ornamental as it is delicious, bringing colour, flavour, and a bit of whimsy to the vegetable garden. Tall, vigorous vines climb eagerly up a trellis and produce an abundance of pods that can be enjoyed fresh, shelled, or dried for winter soups. If you’ve ever wished your peas were just a little more dramatic, these are the ones. They’re also a wonderful way to add visual interest to edible landscaping, especially in small urban gardens where every plant needs to earn its keep. Young pods can be eaten like snow peas, while mature pods reveal pale green peas inside their rich purple shells. Easy to grow, cool-season friendly, and surprisingly prolific, Purple Mist is a perfect companion for spring and early summer gardens across Canada.

While peas aren’t exactly known for attracting pollinators, the pretty blossoms still make a lovely show. With their climbing habit, impressive yields, and fun colour, these peas are a joy for both kids and adults to grow.

Growing Instructions

Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, as peas prefer cool conditions. Plant seeds 1–2 inches deep, using the deeper end of the range for later spring sowings. Provide a sturdy trellis or netting, as the vines can grow quite tall. Peas appreciate rich, well-drained soil with added compost. Keep watered consistently, especially during flowering, to encourage steady pod formation. Harvest young purple pods for snow-pea-style eating, or allow pods to mature fully and shell the peas. For dry peas, leave pods on the vine until the peas harden.

FAQ
Q: Can these peas be eaten both in the pod and shelled?
A: Yes. Harvest early for tender edible pods, or wait until the pods mature and shell the peas for fresh or dried use.

Q: How are Purple Mist peas different from traditional green shelling peas?
A: Their eye-catching purple pods make them ornamental as well as productive, and the vines tend to be taller and more visually striking compared to compact shelling varieties.
