How to Grow High Scent Sweet Peas
Start sweet pea seeds indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before the final spring frost, or direct sow them outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds approximately ½ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil.
Sweet pea seeds have a firm outer coating. Soaking them in lukewarm water for up to 24 hours before planting is optional but may help soften the seed coat.
Install a climbing support early so the developing tendrils have something narrow to grip. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly while the plants are establishing and flowering.
Encouraging More Flowers
Harvest the flowers frequently and remove faded blooms before seed pods mature. Regular cutting encourages the vines to continue producing new flowering stems. Mulching around the roots can also help retain moisture and keep the soil cooler as temperatures rise.
Important: Ornamental sweet pea flowers, seeds, and pods are not edible. They are different from edible garden peas.
