~70+ Seeds

Zebrune heirloom shallots are prized for their elongated, teardrop shape and unique, mild flavour that’s sweeter than regular onions. With a coppery-pink skin and delicate purple rings inside, these shallots bring a gourmet touch to any dish, whether caramelized, roasted, or used fresh in salads.

They’re easy to grow and versatile in the kitchen, offering excellent storage life once harvested. Perfect for gardeners and home chefs looking to elevate their culinary creations!

Zebrune shallots are also know as "banana shallots" due to their elongated shape. They grow to a larger size of 4 - 6" long.

Harvest the onions when the bulbs have reached their desired size and the tops have started to yellow and fall over.

Planting Instructions:

  • Plant onion seeds outdoors in early spring or indoors (preferred) in late winter, 8 - 10 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant outdoors 2-4 weeks after the last frost date.
  • Sow the seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. If planting indoors, sow seeds densely, as they can easily be separating when planting outside later.
  • Trim the onions to 1.5 inches from the base once they have reached about 4 inches high. This encourages stronger, bigger roots.
  • Space the seeds or seedlings about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart in rows that are 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
  • Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.
  • As the onions grow, thin them to the final spacing recommended for mature bulbs, typically 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart.
  • Cure onions in the sun until completely dried, then store in dark, ventilated area.
