Green Onion Scallion Seeds - Fukagawa
~100 Seeds
Fukagawa Green Onions are a cold-hardy bunching onion with long white stems and a mild, fresh onion flavour. This Japanese variety does not form bulbs, making it perfect for harvesting as green onions throughout the season. Plants grow upright and can be planted closely in garden beds or containers, making them a great choice for small spaces.
They are very tolerant of cool weather, allowing for early spring and late summer planting for extended harvests. Harvest by cutting the tops for regrowth or pulling entire plants as needed. Fukagawa Green Onions are an easy, productive crop that provides a steady supply of fresh green onions for salads, soups, and cooking.
Planting Instructions:
- Plant seeds outdoors in early spring or late summer for a fall crop in warmer climates. In cooler climates, start indoors 8 - 10 weeks before last frost.
- Sow the seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in well-draining soil enriched with compost.
- Space the seeds or seedlings about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart in rows that are 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. If planting indoors, sow seeds densely, as they can easily be seperating when planting outside later.
- Trim the onions to 1.5 inches from the base once they have reached about 4 inches high. This encourages stronger, bigger roots.
- Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.
- Harvest the green onions when they reach the desired size, typically when the stalks are about 12 inches (30 cm) tall.
